Habeas Corpus?

Posted in: Opinion

Reading Phil’s latest post got me thinking about recent events. I have to be honest. I am a little scared of our government right now, particularly this administration. I am kind of sorry to say that I voted for Bush now. I think he is growing to powerful and unstable. It is one thing to declare war on terror and beef up security after 9/11. But to start taking apart The Bill of Rights? I have two words for you. Habeas Corpus. And now Bush has the ability to suspend it. Now according to Wikipedia most countries already have the ability to suspend Habeas Corpus, but I still don’t like it. You ever read the book “1984″. Scarriest book out there if you ask me. And in my opinion, this is just one step closer to that happening. Now, some people may think that I am being over dramatic or what have you, but I don’t care. This really scares me. The idea that our right to Habeas Corpus can be suspended. Now granted Lincoln also suspended Habeas Corpus during the Civil War. It’s not the first time it’s happend. Maybe this will be just like that. Hopefully, but I am still not happy about the whole thing. Here is a link to the Bill of Rights. Read through them. Without Habeas Corpus, about half of them don’t apply anymore. Now, most likely we won’t hear anything of this again. Most of us are never going to be in a positon where Habeas Corpus is suspended. But steps are being taken. Steps that could lead down a path to a dictatorship. I would rather not see us take any sort of steps down that sort of path.
